donDon gritting his way through the unbroken hang squat cleans.

First off some sad news. Pipers father passed away Friday night. My deepest condolenses go out to you at this time Piper. I am so sorry for your loss. Please post your thoughts/words to comments.

This week will be a backoff week from our strength cycle and we will be doing some metcon benchmarks. Hit as many as you can, as these are workouts that test your work capacity and your overall fitness level. We will return to these WODs every couple of months or so to see where we stand.

Monday say both Karen and Annie WODs. Try and make these up some time this week if you missed yesterday.

What I take from this? A bit watered down so O’Reilly wouldn’t jump down his throat. Low fat cuts of meat? As long as its natural and not uber processed like a Foster Farms sliced lunch meat, fat found in meat is not only not harmful but necessary. Also, O’Reilly prompting Dr. Eades with its ok to eat grains/pasta/bread etc. as long as its in moderation. Sure if you want to see moderate results. Same with exercise right. Done moderately you will see mediocre results. I think the people who train like we do are not the moderate type. If you have not already, go grain/pasta/bread/and potato free for two months. See what happens. Most important thing to take from that interview was the fact that starch is actually just plain sugar. Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little to no starch and no sugar.

What can I say about Andre? Great athlete, great friend to all those in the box. Always positive attitude and brings such good energy to the gym when hes there. Andre started with us in April of ’09 and his progress in the last 14 months has been nothing short of outstanding. Both photos above look great. Andre had been doing CrossFit already for nine months when the right photo had been shot. He decided to give Paleo eating a shot and the result is the photo on the left. It was about that time that his WOD times were always near the top of the leaderboard. His stats include: 455# deadlift, 325# back squat, and 185# press and 43 pullups in a row. Great having you as one of our own Andre. You will always be a part of this family.

Great story and photos of one womens year of going Paleo and doing CrossFit.Transformation is shocking. Check it out here.

Welcome back OarsMen

May 26th, 2010

Our rowers are back! I want to welcome back the boys from college. ManChild (Berkley), AJ (Univ. of Washinton), and Kevin (Princeton). We will get them in sick shape and ready to dominate on the water come fall time. Here is an article that was written about AJ as he is now the #2 rower on one of if not the top program in the country, Univ. of Washington. At 6’0 and 160# AJ pulls a 6:20 2k. Ridiculous.

For a dedicated olympic lifter to do the following below would not be exceptional. But for a CrossFitter who trains multiple lifts, gymnastics, sprinting, rowing, metcon, etc. to put the following overhead is incredible when you think about it.

Rob Orlando clean and jerks 300# for a triple in the NE Regional comp.

Jessica Pamanian puts 170# overhead for a triple in the womens NE comp.

Piper is an awesome part of the Orange Coast Family. Having only been with us for about 7 months Piper has picked up CrossFit as fast as anyone I have ever coached. Pipes took 2nd place in the Womens Masters division at the Next Level Invitational this year and also competed on our affiliate team at this years CrossFit Regionals. She is a serious competitor and is sure to be a force in the Masters division for many years to come. Congrats on all your success Pipes.

Press 1.1.1.1.1 x5 sets

Rest 3 min bw sets

(Notes: This is a “cluster”.  This means you will unrack the weight and press for one rep. Rack weight, rest EXACTLY 10 sec., unrack and press again. Repeat for total of 5 reps.) Ex. Press, rack, press, rack, press, rack, press, rack, press, rack, finish set. Rest 3 min and repeat for total of 5 sets. The cluster will allow you to press more than you would normally for a continous set. Look up your 5RM and start about 10# lighter than that on your first set. Aim to best your 5RM by the 3rd set.

This has been circulating around lately. This video blew me away. What or how did it make you feel?

Why we choose coconut oil to cook with.

Pulled this from another CrossFit box about our womens page.

“A great page from the website of Orange Coast CrossFit was brought to my attention, via Facebook of all places.  The page highlights the results of many of the women from their gym and a few others.  Click here and take a look.  Chances are, that you as a reader of this blog, are already well aware that CrossFit makes chicks super hot.  However if you have skeptical friends that are afraid to try CrossFit, direct them to these images.  Who knows, you might actually compel somebody else to try constantly varied functional movement at high intensity, which in turn will change that person’s life as it has changed yours.
